Dead by Winter by Darcy Coates

"We are all going to die here"

Wow. Wow. Wow. I mean just wow.

I have found a new favourite author you guys. And trust me when I say this i mean I am gonna obsessively read all the books by the author one after other.

Dead by winter was a totally claustrophobic story that sent chills through my spine and I was actually scared. By scared, I don't mean I was scared of some ghost or a witch or something, scared of an unknown killer who is on a killing spree the middle of nowhere. And to be shamelessly honest that is the best compliment an author can ever get from a reader who is into thrillers and horror.

Okay so coming back to the book, dead of winter by Darcy Coates, the story started with a couple going off vacation in the Rocky mountains to enjoy the snow by themselves, of course through tour manager company, and with them are other few people from different backgrounds and different stories. These people are getting to know each other during the bus ride and everything is just fine, until things start going bad.

The journey is obstructed when a pine tree blocks the way to the resort, the main protagonist Christa and her boyfriend, keirnan set out to explore the mountains while the tour guide Brian tries to clear the path, that is when things starts going. Very very wrong. The snow storms hits very hard, small group of people is forced to take shelter in an abandoned cabin in the middle of nowhere. The night is long, longer than everybody expected, The cabin claustrophobic, unusual eeriness in the air.

That is when people realize that the tour guide is missing, only to be found dead in the morning, with his decapitated head Hung to a tree in front of the cabin.

The story right from the beginning had me hooked, I could feel the anxiety increasing inside me, the feeling of being trapped, the feeling of being hunted down, the feeling of being helpless. Author has so beautifully crafted this piece of art, I could feel every emotion of the story inside my bones. It took me some time to get used to all the characters in the story, considered the fact that there were many, once I got into the story there was no turning back. The spite of having a single point of view, single timeline this book has so much of effect on me. I mean to say is the story was so powerful and was so efficiently written that it needn't had to have anything else.

The characters were lovable, personally I connected to the main protagonist so well that it made me feel that I was right there inside her body. Author manage to create a very spooky environment, truly claustrophobhobic, the right amount of details really helped me create a picture of the scenario in my head. 1 point I would like to highlight is that the amount of details we just perfect, not inadequate, nor excessive. Just the right amount.

The writing was super easy to understand, the work of someone who knew what he was doing. A fastpaced thriller with all the creepiness. The book was almost everywhere on the book is community, it deserves all the applause and appreciation it gets. The book had me hooked. I just could not put this one down honestly I read this one in a day.

Since you have read my review so far, just small spoiler hint, if you read this book carefully enough, you have the mystery solved right away. Because for me I had it figured out pretty much halfway through.

Definitely recommended anyone who loves thrillers, suspense, locked room mystery and even horror. Just go for this one.
